Masala Dosa

Masala Dosa is the most famous and delicious South Indian food item which is loved by people across India. With a filling of basic vegetables, Masala Dosa is an ideal breakfast for its qualities of being a light yet filling food item. These days it is available in many varieties including Chinese, Paneer, Jain dosa etc. Today we would check out the recipe for basic and simple Masala Dosa.

Let's have a look at preparation of basic Masala Dosa:

Quantity: One plate


Dosa batter:

  • 1 1/2 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup Urad dal
  • salt
  • Oil


  • Large sized potatoes - 2
  • Medium sized Onion - 1
  • Boiled Peas - 1 cup
  • Mustard seeds - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Turmeric - 1/2 teaspoon
  • Green chillies - 2 to 3
  • Oil - 1 teaspoon
  • Salt - to taste

Cooking Method:

  • Soak rice and urad dal for at least 6 hours or you can soak them overnight as well.
  • Grind well to form a smooth paste.
  • Mix together and add salt and water to form a thin batter.
  • Store overnight at room temperature so that it ferments well.
  • Heat dosa pan and griddle with little ghee or butter.
  • Spread the mix on pan in circular motion to form thin Dosa.
  • Cook it well so that one side becomes crispy and reddish in colour.

The Masala filling:

Heat oil in a pan, add muster seeds and let them splutter. Add peas, onions and spices. Fry the mixture for nearly 5 minutes till onion turns golden brown. Add smashed potatoes, mix well and let it cook for some time.

Filling time:

After one side of Dosa turns reddish brown and crisp put filling on it and roll over. You can also give a triangular shape to the dosa by rolling over three sides of it. Serve hot with coconut chutney or sambar.
