Gulab Jamun

Indian restaurants in Melbourne serve you with ace quality of delicious desserts. Amongst the many mouth watering sweets of India, Gulab Jamun is considered the most loved dessert. Easy to cook the highlight of this sweet is that it remains fresh for a week on room temperature and even longer when refrigerated.

Let's check out the method of preparing Gulab Jamun:

  • Preparation time : 15 minutes
  • Cooking time: 30 minutes
  • Number: 20 (4 to 5 servings)

  • Milk powder - 1 cup
  • Plain flour (Maida) - 1/4 cup
  • Saltless butter - 3 tbsp
  • Milk - 1/4 cup
  • Baking soda - 1small pinch
  • Sugar - 1 3/4 cups
  • Water - 1 1/2 cup
  • Finely crushed cardamom seeds - 4
  • Almond & pistachio powder - 1tbsp
  • Oil for deep frying

  • Method:
  • Sugar Syrup (Chashni):
    • Take a large pan, add water, sugar and cardamom powder in it. Allow it to boil.
    • Boil it for a minute and remove from the flame.
    • Keep stirring the syrup till sugar gets absolutely dissolved.
    • Keep the syrup aside
  • Gulab Jamun:
    • Take milk powder and flour in a bowl.
    • Add pinch of baking powder in it.
    • Add butter and properly mix the stuff.
    • Add milk and make smooth and soft dough. Knead the dough properly.
    • Keep the dough for some time so that milk powder absorbs extra milk.
    • If it is not soft enough add more milk and knead it.
    • As the dough would be sticky, greasing your hands with butter would help.
    • Divide the dough into small chunks (nearly 20) and roll them to make round balls.
    • Take a frying pan and add oil in it. Keep the stove at medium flame.
    • The oil layer should cover at least 1 1/2 inch of the pan surface.
    • Once the oil gets heated, start frying the balls.
    • Gulab Jamuns swell up to double the size so, keep few so that they get enough space.
    • Keep rolling them while frying so that they become evenly brown.
    • Allow the balls to cool down and then only place them in the sugar syrup.
    • Dip the gulab jamun's in syrup for at least 20 minutes so that the syrup penetrates inside the balls.
    • Serve in bowls after meals and enjoy this juicy dessert!!

  • If your family and kids have a sweet tooth then Gulab Jamun would be an ideal treat for them. Though this dessert would be available in major Indian restaurants of Melbourne, cooking at home would add your personal charm. So, cook, eat and enjoy!!
