Plain Naan

This Indian style bread is a staple diet of people and accompanies curries of all types. Traditionally cooked in clay ovens (tandoor), it can be now made in regular ovens. You will find it in all north and south Indian restaurants in Melbourne and is soft and smooth in taste.

Let's learn the method of preparing plain naan:

Ingredients:

  • All purpose flour - 2 cups (Maida)
  • Dry yeast - 1 tsp
  • Salt - 1 tsp
  • Sugar - 1 tsp
  • Baking soda - 1 pinch
  • Oil - 2 tbsp
  • Curd - 2 1/2 tbsp
  • Warm water - 3/4 cup
  • Maida (for rolling) - 1/4 cup
  • Butter or ghee - 1 tsp


Method:

  • In luke warm water, dissolve dry yeast and keep it for 10 minutes.
  • The water should become frothy.
  • Take the flour in bowl and add salt, baking soda and sugar in it.
  • Now, add oil, curd in the flour and mix well to make crumbly dough.
  • Add the yeast dissolved water in the flour and make smooth dough.
  • Knead well. With a piece of cloth cover the dough and keep for 3-4 hours.
  • The volume of the dough should be double.
  • Make small balls of the dough and roll into 8 inch breads.
  • Heat the oven and place the naan inside.
  • Before placing the naan in oven, roll it with wet hands.
  • Cook for 2 to 3 minutes and flip on other side.
  • It should become golden brown which suggests proper baking.
  • Brush it with butter or ghee.
