Paneer Butter Masala

This cottage cheese curry is a famous north Indian food item eaten with roti (Inidan bread) or naan. Loved by kids and elders alike, this curry is a tasty delicacy with creamy texture. A favourite of all Indians, you would find this in all major Indian restaurants of Melbourne.

Let's check the method of preparing it:

Preparation time: 15 minutes
Cooking time: 20 to 30 minutes
Servings: 4

Ingredients:

  • Fresh cottage cheese
  • (chopped in triangles)  - 500 grams
  • Butter - 5 tbsp
  • Oil- 1 tsp
  • Bay leaves - 2 or 3
  • Cloves - 3
  • Cinnamon - 2 (one inch stick)
  • Crushed red dried chillies - 2
  • Crushed coriander seeds - 2 tbsp
  • Sliced onion - 1 cup
  • Ginger paste - 2 tsp
  • Garlic paste - 2 tsp
  • Red chilli powder - 1 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 1 tsp
  • Chopped tomatoes - 5 to 6
  • Kasoori methi - 1/2 tsp
  • Fresh cream - 2 tsp
  • Salt - to taste

Method:

  • Take a frying pan, put 3 tbsp butter and 1 tsp ghee and heat it.
  • Add bay leaves, cloves, cinnamon, partially crushed coriander seeds and red chillies in it.
  • Cook for 30 seconds.
  • Add chopped onions into this pan and cook till it turns pink.
  • Add ginger and garlic pastes and cook for 30 seconds.
  • Tomatoes, red chilli powder and coriander powder needs to added now.
  • Cook on high flame till oil oozes out of the mixture.
  • Crush and puree the mixture.
  • Now take another pan, add some butter in it.
  • Cook the puree for a while in this pan.
  • Add paneer slices and water into it.
  • After adding salt as per the taste, cook this curry for five more minute keeping the lid of the pan closed.
  • Once its done, sprinkle kasoori methi to add aroma.
  • Add cream at the end and mix lightly.
  • Serve with hot rotis, parathas or naans.
