Dal Tadka

Dal tadka is a popular side item of Punjabi cuisine. Mouth watering in taste this item takes minutes to cook and is nutritious and appetising. Ingredients:

  • Masoor dal - 1 cup
  • (red lentil)
  • Yellow mung dal - 1/4 cup
  • (split yellow gram)
  • sliced onion - 1/4 cup
  • chopped tomato - 1/4 cup
  • ginger garlic paste - 2 tsp
  • nigella seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • cumin seeds - 1/2 tsp
  • turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
  • kashmiri red chilli - 1
  • ghee - 2 tbsp
  • salt - to taste

Method:

  • Soak cleaned and washed dals in water for 20 minutes.
  • Pressure cook lentils in 2 cups water along with green chillies, ginger garlic paste and turmeric powder for 3 whistles. Mash the mixture lightly.
  • In a heated pan, take 1tbsp ghee.
  • Add onions, ginger garlic paste, turmeric and salt.
  • Cook till onions turn golden brown.
  • Add tomatoes plus chopped coriander and saute for few minutes.
  • In this pan, add the mixture of dal from the cooker.
  • Add 1 cup water and cook on slow flame for few minutes till the dal becomes thick.
  • Switch off the stove and pour the dal in a bowl.
  • In a small heated pan, take ghee.
  • Add cumin seeds, mustard seeds, hing, red chilli and saute for few seconds.
  • Pour this over the dal.
  • Serve hot with naan, roti, jeera rice or lachcha paratha.
